Gather ye Rosebuds...

Maybe it's that Valentines' Day is around the corner, but have you noticed all the lovely rose-inspired clothes and decor coming for Spring and Summer? I'm enchanted all over again with the romance of roses...Suddenly, I've got flashbacks of wistfully shopping at Laura Ashley in the eighties. Oh how I longed for all of it and could afford very little. Well, here's our second chance.. And if you're a twenty-something or thereabouts it's all new for you and I say work it!

For this look to work it needs to be paired with sparer and more streamlined decor and brighter or deeper hues. You don't want to get all musty, fusty great aunt with it..

I remember this spread a few years back, in the beloved and now gone Domino magazine.. No one was using chintz roses then. How about chintz on brown leather? Love!

Fashionistas need to mix roses with more modern shapes and rougher textures to avoid the Sue Heck look...(You do watch The Middle, don't you? Sue's character has a time machine wardrobe straight from my high school days c.1983..I don't know how they find the stuff! By the way, the kids in this show are hilarious.)

Stella McCartney Collection. Brighter shades and no lace here!

Toms for Spring...

From my last trip to The Ivy...sigh..Their roses are always amazingly beautiful.

My stylish friend Leasa sent me the link to these gorgeous chintz roses on snakeskin Jimmy Choos...

Helena Bonham Carter. The original Room With a View is one of my all-time favorites. (You can watch the whole thing on this link. The young Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are also superb in this.) Fabulous movie.

Having Laura Ashley déjà vu yet?

From the 80s Laura Ashley catalogs.. I remember dreaming about these dresses and owned one not unlike these below. No wonder I didn't worry about working out! The one time in my life I was quite tiny and... I was wearing these? How great is the hair?

Such a romantic time. I see now why maybe I didn't go on many dates. I had other things on my mind like emulating Lady Diana. Did I mention I was a bit of a late bloomer?

Anyhow, the Laura Ashley brand is back and the lampshades below are part of their new home collection... Fun!

Stripes pair well with chintzy florals and look hip.

Something about the umbrella and this entry makes me want to run off to the Cotswolds and buy a little cottage..

She's darling...hating her!

My dream bedroom.

Not that I'm sanctioning floral pants, (especially for my age- hello 1980s Guess?), but these are pretty cute on Miranda Kerr and I'm envious of her Sophia Coppola LV bag.

J Crew

These wedges are on my shopping list for Spring. Can you just see these with distressed jeans and a lacey white vintage blouse?!! A collaboration between Tom's and Shabby Chic they are to be out later in February...

What do you think of this trend? Been there and still love it or all new to you?

  1. Hi Kim,
I'm loving this post. Like you, I was all over the chintz, and rosey posey fabrics in the 80's so this is like a flashback. I had a crush on all things Laura Ashley. In 1979 I traveled to London, for the first time, and Laura Ashley was at the top of my must see list (I know-it was all about the shopping back then). I've been seeing florals again, all over, and your collection is really gorgeous. It makes me think...maybe it's time to add a bit of posey to my life again. Have a gorgeous weekend Kim.

Just ordered those Tom's for Mad's Valentine along with a Tom's sweatshirt. I knew that had to be part of your collection of rose photos and there it was!!

    1. Annie, Ha! So true about the weight! Who would know? I need that now.

It just seems so long ago now.. I love that you had Laura Ashley too. Yes, I remember feeling so chic, but it was almost a bit puritan looking back..

I can see Madeline wearing those Toms. So cute for her!

  3. Roses are one of my favourite flowers. Lovely photos to see during our snowstorm right now. Roses print in fashion and for the home are so feminine and chic. Have a good weekend Kim.

  6. Hey hey Kim!

What a FANtastic post - beautifully detailed photos, and the giggles in your writing so well done = inspirational!

I too loved the Ashley, but always chose the solid colors. I could use a floral shoe - now you have me on the hunt. :-)

    Cheers!

    1. Linda, How are you?
Funny you said you had the solid colors...A friend just told me all her Laura Ashley were solid too ...AND she still has them in her closet! Wow, one is a solid yellow suit that she says still looks fab. I know the quality of L.Ashley was really good...I'm going for the shoes too. May be safer, but still fun.

  9. I won't be working the rose print BUT I did plant the garden a few years ago with masses of roses and after a few slow years I'm hoping that this year will be the year they go bananas.

  10. Oh I'm totally hating on that girl in the floral coat too - haha. And I LOVE that chair upholstered in floral fabric in that third shot, I want I want I want! I love the effort you put into collecting all of these great images. I think my all-time favorite decor style is natural wood, white and colorful florals. It may have something to do with my Southern upbringing, for better or worse. ;)

And I am embarrassed to say this but I have finally answered to the award you gave me back in NOVEMBER (omg - so sorry!) and will be posting about it a little later in the week. It was really fun! :)

Hope you have a great week and happy Valentine's Day!

  14. Kim! You always have the best photos - your blog is such a treat to come to. I love florals and might start with something like that floral shirt with jeans. You're so right too - florals with stripes are just gorgeous! Thanks for all these yummy ideas. You've brightened up a foggy morning for me here.
