Sweaters and Shorts

This time of the year, I'm ready for shorts and dresses. However, the weather can be flaky and days can fluctuate from warm to rainy and cool like we had this weekend in Northern California. The perfect solution is sweaters with shorts. I personally love this look.

I'm not talking the tacky cut-offs with raggedy edges and pockets sticking out -So Britney Spears ladies! Class up your shorts wardrobe and find some that are neither too short nor too tight. You don't want them so long either..In fact a shorter length can sometimes hit at a more flattering spot on the leg than a longer short can, so try on many..

Loving the cable knit and penny loafers. Something about a sweater is just so cozy and yet the addition of shorts say Summer. It's very East Coast where Summers in Maine and those regions can be very cool.

I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but she looks very cute with these flats, little bag and sweater.

This Chanel sweater jacket looks great paired with relaxed shorts and perfect for a night out on Gwyneth Paltrow.

Kate Moss is known for wearing her cut-offs, but looks lovely in these classier shorts and cardigan.

My personal rule with shorts is always wear flats or a very low heel. There's something about high heels and shorts that I find tacky. Pretty flat sandals or ballets are perfect.  (Being over 40, I am careful where I wear shorts. I wear them at the park, beach, shopping and running about. Otherwise, I default to skirts, especially when traveling.)

I love a V-neck boyfriend or slouchier sweater paired with shorts, long necklaces and flats for day and jeweled T-strap flat sandals for night. In fact some of the best sweaters are probably in your husband's closet right now! If not, J Crew has some great ones here and here and here. I've even bought them in the guys departments in smaller sizes as well.

Olivia Palermo (above and below), is the shorts queen and wears them with everything.

With a sweater and your shorts you can stay cozy, but still keep your Spring mindset!!

What do you think? Do you have any opinions on shorts? Do you think they look okay on woman over 40? Tell me what you think!

Have a great week!

Kim

  1. I adore shorts - on other people. I just don't have the figure for it ( not since I was about 12!) But I don't think age should be a part of it - if you look good then as you have shown there are plenty of way to make it look elegant. But mind you that issue doesn't come up very often here in London!! xx

    1. I do think that it isn't for everyone and skirts are far more lovely on most. Just wanted to show some shorts that can be elegant if you choose the right ones and of course on the right person.! I probably won't be packing shorts for London..How does Kate Moss wear them all the time? Her legs must get cold!

  2. I love wearing shorts in the summer but not when going downtown. Mostly at home or in the cottage. Kate Moss rocks it in that shorts and sweater outfit. She looks good in anything.

    1. Pam, I agree they aren't something I wear in the city. Definitely a more casual look!

  3. These images are really fun. I love the idea of shorts with a light sweater because that means it's not too hot AND not too cold. It's a very beachy concept for me. Lovely images here Kim. I see that some of your images are from Pinterest. Have you noticed any broken links in your older posts with Pinterest photos?
    Happy Tuesday my friend!

    1. Heather thanks! Love the casualness of it.

I did have that trouble with Pinterest. Now what I do is download the images to my own computer and then upload. That way they won't go away. All my old posts I used linked photos and they all end up disappearing eventually. You have to download, but it does end up being a bit more work and space on your computer! Hope that works!

  5. Such cute shorts looks!
I love shorts - I wear them at a 3" to 5" length, no longer than that. Long shorts make me look matronly and are not flattering on me at all.
I will wear a heel with my shorts - but only about 2.5" at the most. I also like wearing gladiator sandals and ballet flats with them.
Love GPs look with the Chanel sweater jacket.

  6. Such a lot of goodness today - can't stop scrolling up and down, I've never seen so many great looking shorts - you always have the best collections of photos on your blog. Olivia Palermo in those cuffed green ones is so gorgeous - even her Maltese is prettier than that (though I would never tell Teddy that). yes to the shorts and the flats and with the sweater so great. My legs used to be okay but now gravity has had her way and I don't even really like my knees anymore. Its really tricky to find a nice bermuda - I always end up back at Banana Republic because no one else does them. I should try Tommy Bahamas I guess but it always seems to be so middle aged...

    1. Jody, Thanks so much! I agree about Banana Republic. Just went there today and they have some very good shorts in many lengths and styles. I particularly like ones with a tie belt. Super cute. I forget about Tommy Bahama. They do have some great stuff too. My legs are not so great, but wearing them anyway..

    1. Tabs, I'm with you..Wearing shorts while I can. Thank goodness for the bit of leg color I have from tennis. I think self-tanner helps a lot too if you find one that looks real..So far too naturally white for that.

  8. I love everyone of these looks and I agree with you about shorts and flats. Kate Moss looks good in those classier shorts with the simple cardi and the Chanel jacket just shows how you can smarten up a pair of shorts! I'm enjoying my visits to your lovely blog - just added it to my blog roll of blogs I love!!

  10. Perfect post, I looove your style ! The only things I don't like : Chanel jacket with shorts (too dressy) and I can't abide leather shorts but then again it's Palermo wearing them so .. XX

  12. Hi Kim,

    I love these looks.
I haven't worn shorts for years, but I remember fondly when I did. I love seeing them on younger women with pretty legs. There is no worse look then on those who they don't flatter. I think you can still get away with it after 40 if you have great legs and work it right.
Thank you for you sweet comments on our yard. I would love to invite you over whenever you are up my way so you can experience it in person. I know we would get on terrifically!! Take care, Terri XO

  13. Another great post. I pretty much wear shorts like you...during the day, and I live in them bascially here in North Carolina, but that is during my stay-at-home mom mode. I don't wear them to dinner or anything like that unless I'm eating with the kids in a very casual chain/suburb restaurant. I have two pairs of shorts now..and that's about it. A pair from JCrew in Navy, and a periwinkle pair from the Gap. I have a pair of white denim shorts from the Loft, but I have to wear them with longer tops/tunics. They look better that way. Since it is casual, I wear them with my Tory Burch espadrilles, or a sandal. I"m not a fashionista at all.
