My Summertime Bucket List

My youngest son and his friends are making Summer Bucket Lists and it's very sweet. I love the happy start of Summer and all it's possibilities just swirling about in my head... Ah, the potential of it! I thought I'd make my own Summer list.. I'd love to hear some of yours as well!

On my list. . .

Getting my toes pretty and wearing my sandals everywhere I can..Don't you love these retro Salt-water sandals? I don't know about you, but growing up in 1970's California this is all we wore. Colors were either  red, navy, white or brown. No toe protection for flying feet and yes many a toe were skinned.

Biking as many places as I can around town. Getting misted by a nearby sprinkler adds bonus points! Already biked to lunch with the sons to our town's hot dog and malt shop. :)

Love to look as cute as Garance Dore above photo by her Habitually Chic boyfriend.

Many bike trips to the library and lots of lazy afternoons reading with a glass of ice tea on the patio.

Repeat this daily! Let this be your Summer mantra.

Don't forget to smell the lavender and all the other lovelies blooming. Fill your home. Right now I've got a whole bouquet of gardenia next to my bed courtesy of my pal Jen's garden and it's heaven. Making dried lavender sachets tied with ribbon is a fun a activity for the kids as well.

Beach days!

         One word: naps!

At least one road trip is in my future. I make playlists for each of my trips so I can relive my vacation  when I hear the songs again! So fun.

Pack up my "dream car" this white Defender and head out.. Yes I suppose a Defender is a thing not a moment, so forget I said that. . .
Hey did I mention I like the ones with the snorkels?

I will consume as much mint, basil, figs and watermelon as humanly possible.

                               Alfresco baby!

Pup tents under the stars...Or in the garage a few hours later..."Mom, we heard noises."

I hope to get to two of my favorite Northern California spots- Pinecrest Lake and Lake Tahoe. I love being with the mountains, the smell of the pine trees and time with my whole family.

Still looking for my dream hat that covers enough, looks stylish and doesn't look like Darth Vader...(You know what I'm talking about? Some scary sun visors out there!)

Picnics and croquet! Croquet tournaments -even better.

Badminton! Net or not...

Poolside with a hat and book. A little shade would be nice. My husband laughs because my optimal temperature is 79 and I would prefer it to stay that as much as possible. Thank you so much.

A little romance? Just saying..Isn't this the cutest?

At least one boat ride across a lake. .  Did I mention I do have a tiny fear of boats?
I think I can do very small lakes however.

                             Beach walks!

I'd love to have a retro pool party!

Let's have guys in white shoes and mint jackets, girls with big hair loud prints...That Tequila song playing in the background. This is so my childhood. Anyone still got a cool swim cap? :D

Okay sorry off track here..,but the umbrellas really were cute weren't they? (Slim Aarons' photos)

I need to watch some of my favorite chick flicks again like, "It's Complicated."

And I'll be thrilled if any of my men here at home will watch the original, "A Room With A View," with me. I am still enchanted by this movie after 25 years with it's fantastic characters, and views of Italy and England. Based on the E.M. Forester novel it's a great Summer read as well.

Best movie kiss ever.

A young Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith before she became the dowager of Downton.

Travels to new places near and far.

Exploring the parks of the world..

or appreciating stuffed Eiffel Towers while wearing chocolate crepes

Trains, planes and automobiles! I love the romance of travel.

Let's do this!

Now tell me all about your Summer bucket lists!

  2. Great post, Kim.
I also love Pinecrest Lake. Have you ever hiked up to Chloe's Baths (I think that's what it's called).
On my bucket list for summer is meeting you in the city :)
    Happy Friday!

    1. Thanks Adrienne! Pinecrest is so wonderful and yes I have hiked up there! We always love doing a hike around the lake at least and try to rent a boat to go to one of the rock islands at the other end and spend the day there with lunch. Something about there just feels like an old school Summer and I love it.

I can't wait to meet up! Def on my list too!
      Have a great weekend!

    2. Meet at the Pier Market and eat out on the dock side. If it's too warm for Miss 79 go inside and share the caviar tower with champagne. Walk up to Coit Tower,....

Promise you'll tell me what day you're doing this so I can be there in spirit!

      Cheers!

  3. Beautiful images Kim and I like your list:) I agree.. you have to establish a daily regime that allows you to stop and smell the flowers (so to speak!). I like the idea of incorporating a daily bike ride! Hiking or walking daily is always a must. It's a necessity with my dogs and it clears my head and prepares me for the day.

I'm away from blogging at the moment.. it's been too hectic with graduation parties, birthdays, and all kinds of events that require my attention. I'll be back next week:)

  5. Fill a 3 yard dumpster with a hillside of 30 year old junipers. Check!

Order a second dumpster to complete the job. "to do" before Labor Day

Friends & Family come to stay. Both will be completed by June 23

Read a book. Check! "The Duck Commander Family" they are the "Cosby Family" of this decade*. *opinion based on hours of watching their show "Duck Dynasty"

Kim, I had those saltwater sandals in the 60's getting a new white pair every year. Put my kids in them too so they would learn the important lesson of not catching the toe while they ran. Is that bad? :-)

Here's to napping and bike riding!

    1. Linda,

You are so right about learning not to catch your toe. You've got to lift your darn feet up. No scuffing about!! Now all the kids want Keens so their toes are coddled and the school won't even allow open toes! Can you believe it? What's this world coming to? A bunch of spoiled children with pampered feet. My kids can't believe it when my Dad tells them he went barefoot to school half the year growing up in Fullerton. Crazy they think. No wonder kids are so useless now...:P

Well, I have to say I'm glad the junipers aren't on my list. I pulled a ton of those dinosaurs out at my previous house and can I say they are serious opponents. Hate them with a passion and they are officially petrified I think. I mean have you ever actually seen one grow? Also heard 70% of the population is allergic to them. They were put all over California homes as cheap landfillers and living in an older neighborhood with quite senior neighbors they are hanging on everywhere here!

But I'm digressing from our lovely Summer thoughts.. Have fun with the guests and I can't wait to see your yard all done! I hope you'll post!

      xxKim

p.s. Apparently I need to get on the Duck bandwagon!

    1. Leigh. It's one of the funniest movies. I really laugh so much and I adore the Santa Barbara home that Meryl's character lives in. Worth watching just for that.

      Happy Summer to you too!

  9. I love watery places - rivers, lakes, oceans - and I am not comfortable being in a boat so far out I can't see the shore - perhaps an idea I can always swim to shore if there is a problem? A couple of weekend getaways to visit with family in other parts of CA, and bonfires (at home and the beach) are on my list. A resounding yes to everything on your list - I'm confident you'll manage to check everything off and look forward to the hoped for sharing! I love summer -

  10. I agree, soundtracks on road trips are the best!

Love your picks (those pool party photos are fab!) Let's see, what is on my list......other than some indoor and outdoor renos, we are going to the cottage in July....hope to do some boating, canoeing there. I usually re-read some good books over the summer, I've been thinking of re-reading some of my favorite books from my childhood this summer (Judy Blume, Nancy Drew, Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley)....

I also want to learn how to make canned salsa and tomato sauce this summer once the tomatoes are ripe.

Oh Hubs and I are wanting to buy a record player this summer - we've found a store near where we live, the owner sells brand new record players. That's on our list too.

  14. Kim, I think that you and I are almost the same person! haha. I love Room with a View, Paris, and It's Complicated! My mother in law wears one of those "Darth Vader" helmets. The first time I saw it I asked her if she had joined a S.W.A.T. team. She was not amused.

  15. Now how did I miss this fantastic, delicious post?
Kim, I just adore your blog and getting to know more about you. Love your humor, our mutual love of Slim Aarons vibe and Lake Tahoe. My family had a cottage at the lake until just a couple of years ago. So many wonderful memories. Those little lakes (what's the name?) at the crest of the mountain on Hwy 50 have some little boats for hire that are not scary at all. Now if I say 'panga' in the surf in Cabo-that's definitely more scary for a small boat situation.
Bucket list for me-R and R baby, a little dancing (blurred lines and all), a little travel (Dominican Republic) and romance is nice too!
    Happy Summer lovely,
    xx, Heather
