Vans, Birkenstocks and The Flat Shoes of Spring

What's the story with shoes this Spring?  Everyone has suddenly decided comfort is king.

J CREW

Have you seen all the tennies (does anyone else say that? ), Vans and Van wanna-bes about?

Then I read in Bazaar yesterday they declared wedge sandals out and you should 'store' them. What? I happen to like my wedges. ( Humph) They say it is the season of the flat sandal.

Remember these Adidas Shower Sandals?

Apparently, the shoes of cute swimmers are back and you'll see a lot of different takes on them

Fashion Police this week they said they loved the flat and low sandals with everything.

That's Not My Age wrote about the comfy sandal thing here.

Then there's the whole Birkenstock revival going on.

I just love this look.

I tried this pair on at the Nordstrom Rack the other day...

This look wasn't the same on me, but they did feel comfy. They are a lot more affordable there.

Maybe a more fashiony pair is more me. I like the cream and black versions.

I did get these..

They are Steve Madden and were $22 on the clearance section. Very comfortable and I like the zip in back- no fussing with a buckle. I'm lazy that way. Who can't resist another pair of nude sandals? They  have a very low wedge and are more flattering than you think...I am hoping to wear these with  distressed skinny Current Elliot jeans and a flesh toned silk blouse. Are they too disco with all the studs?

As far as Vans, I still have memories of going to downtown Los Gatos with my high school bestie,  Monica to Alex's Surf Shop, with wadded up babysitting dollars to buy white Vans around 1983.  Monica got a custom pink and blue version with checkerboard rubber trim. Hers were way more flash. Story of my life. I'm a sucker for the classics I guess even then.

Somehow, the all-white Vans still hold some charm for me as I got a little thrill opening the J. Crew Catalog and seeing this..

I swear I had the exact pair and washed them with Tide in my mother's machine. I wore them with dolphin shorts and a long sleeve Dr Zoggs T.  ( Vaurnet glasses with a leash too of course!)

So can you still go back if it's been 30 years?

I'm thinking I might get a pair for Summer escapades. (God know those are to the exciting grocery.)

On the been there, done that note, what about these Wayfarers? I also had those back in the day and just bought these. My 12 year old told me under no circumstances should I be wearing these and aviators are better for moms. Who made him Tim Gunn?

What do you think?

  1. I wore Keds in high school. Sherry top siders on our boat and have been toying with the idea of getting some new summer shoes and am a bit surprised the wedge is considered out of fashion....my espadrilles are going to get worn even thought they are not the flavour of the season!
Well I am not an expert on sunglasses but Wayfarers are classic...my Ray Ban aviators have been in a drawer for almost a decade....if your young advisor is right I might dig them out of storage!
    Like your fun new sandals....

    1. Hostess, I had Keds too. Love wedge espadrilles! Too funny about the glasses. Not sure where he is getting his info! Glad you think my sandals are okay!

  2. Like Hostess, I wore Keds in high school too. And with my height, I have always loved a flat shoe trend!
    Such a fun post!
Can't wait to see you in a few weeks! Will you be bringing your Steve Madden sandals?

    1. Adrienne, I had Keds and Vans. I think that's all I wore and later some scary Reeboks with Velcro.
Yea for flats! I agree. No more suffering to be chic. Can't wait to see you and yes these will be coming too!! Thanks girl. xoox

  4. Just bought the wayfarers too, after I saw Michelle Williams wear them. I have been wondering about the boyfriend overalls. I know I wore them the first time around - but I think they look so cute and perfect for heading to the park with the boys. Too old??? Those black and white shower sandals bring me back! Loved them then....

    1. Danielle, Sorry the comment moderation thing is on, and it takes me a bit to publish them. I think you must look super in wayfarer styles with your dark hair! You should wear the overalls. Perfect for the park and you probably would style them super cute. I know, I remember all the swimmer guys wearing those sandals. They all look so relaxed and cute I want some now. Love to see you in the overalls. Hope those cute boys are good. Thanks for the note!! xx

  5. This was such a fun post Kim because I can't believe all these sandals I wore in Jr. High are back, especially the Adidas flip flops and Vans. hehe. I know what you mean about the Birkenstocks - I like them on sites I'm see with all the high fashion girls, but I know I can't bring myself to wear them. I LOVE the blush ones you got with the zipper in the back. They'll be perfect for Spring. I'm definitely storing my wedges though and not getting rid of them. Thanks for the shootout too at the end.

    1. Dale, funny isn't it? Yes, I hope I can wear those blush sandals. Guess I'll be pulling all my flats out of the back of the closet... Yes, I hope everyone sees there is still time to get their sleepers!

  6. I only wear Wayfarer sunglasses! Love the classic shape and I think they are more flattering to the face than most styles. Flat sandals, hmmm, I can't even think about it we're having such a long winter. Oh to wear regular shoes and not boots!
Love those studded sandals you bought and great price! The outfit you are planning around them sounds fab. xox

  7. I have to wear socks or my feet get hot and sweaty in Keds. Sometimes socks are OK but by the time summer gets going and I'm into doing my nail polish every week I default to sandals because they're easier.

I love Birks and have collected a number of the more casual line in patterns. I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten on my pink camo pair. They're white/black/pink and tan. Between those and some blue/brown/yellow ones I'm covered almost anything I wear in the summer.

    1. Rose, does seem like most of these vans and sneakers are worn without socks right now. Yes, for Summer I agree it gets too hot barefoot in them. Love that you have pink camo Birks! So cool and I bet they are cute. Would be nice to have a collection like that.

  8. Fun post Kim! I like a sporty, supportive shoe .. or something with a wedge, so the birkenstocks aren't my favorite;) The flat Vans aren't that comfortable for me but they are super cute! I like all the colors of the Nike line that's out. Happy Monday! xxL

    1. Leslie, does seem like the Nikes are the choice for support, comfort and cuteness now..Birks make me feel like I am gripping my toes when I walk and Vans are very flat...
      Happy Monday! x

  9. Girl - we are on the same wavelength. I JUST ordered and got my first pair of Vans EVER - the black and white checkerboard ones- and have worn them nonstop since I got them. LOVE them. I like some flat sandals, but I CANNOT with Birkenstocks. I just can't. I also can't if the sandals are too chunky clunky. They are too much like those Frankenstein clunkers from the early 90s (which I reveled in at the time, but not this time around). I like your Steve Maddens - they're pretty darn cute. As far as sunglasses - I personally am partial to aviators, but like a Rayban now and then. I say wear what YOU want!

    1. Merci, Don't a lot of these flats remind you of 90s sandals? I'm having Seinfeld flashbacks! I love that you have a pair of checkered Vans! Very cool. Yes, I will wear both pairs and I don't care what the tweens think!!

  10. what? No, that nuts. I hate every single one of he comfy styles, especially those ugly shower sandals! yikes.

I love my flat sandals in summer, but they are not a good option on days when you ahev to walk a lot, because they offer no support at all. Wedges are a much better choice. No way I am bending to fashion on this - I don't want to look back in ten years and cringe at having ever given in the the comfy shoe trend. Yuck.

    Your sandals are super-cute though!

    1. Elisa, I so agree about walking all day in a really flat sandal. You need some support or a bit of wedge! Keep doing your own thing! Also at this age, I have to say comfortable shoes are a high priority. I won't do a shoe that hurts no matter how cute anymore! xx

  11. Hi Kim....I normally feel more comfortable with a heel but if I thought I looked any way like the above photo I would don the birkenstocks in a flash! They look super comfortable too:)

    1. The styling makes them look a lot more attractive than I think they normally are. Maybe that is because I am used to seeing them on more earthy types and not in a fashion sense at all!! They were really comfy...xx

  12. Kim, I've just lost myself (for the past hour) reading through your blog. So grateful you dropped by so I had the chance to meet such a wonderful woman. I'm just thrilled to have connected with you, your blog hits home in so many areas.
As for this post - been there, done that, I think we might have been wearing the same shoes and tee shirt (3o years ago). I think it makes us pretty darn hip right now, don't ya think? I'm kind of liking this flat trend right now, I love playful and comfort, especially when paired with a skirt. I may or may not have to pay jcrew another visit shortly.

  15. Kim,
I left a lengthy comment yesterday...but then I think it disappeared on me. Just in case I'm repeating myself, let me just say as I tall person I am always happy when flats are in fashion! I always have a couple pair of Birkenstocks. With my size 41 they are quite hideous, but once broken in they are great for lots of walking. And I love the tennis shoe phase we are in....tretorns for me, you too??

  16. Nice post Kim and I think that your new sandals are cute! It is so nice to know that I can wear one of my five pairs of Vans and become stylish again (At least for a season) lol. Birkenstocks have never been one of my favorites, but I am definitely liking the flat shoe trend. I think you and I were style twins in the 80's although I preferred the cat eye Vuarnet's and everything OP haha.

    1. Kelley, I do think we may have worn our OPs together on a few adventures- like to Lake Tahoe? Still remember horseback riding with your family!!

You know I think here in California, Vans really never went out..My kids have worn them for at least 10 years and my 70 + dad still does too!! They are just going mainstream now. The appeal I think is the ease of getting them on and out. They are simple too. I love them for kids as they can get shoes on and out the door to school fast.
Love to see you in your Vans Kel!!

  18. Love them, the colour and the studs and the strap! I need the strap around the back but have decided I have very weird feet knuckles (or whatever they're called) and some shoes are very scrapey so many sandals are passed onto my sister.

  19. Hi Kim~I commented earlier this week and my iPad ate my comment. Finally back on the computer. I always enjoy your take on fashion trends. I still love my wedges, too, but these are fun looks. LOVE your new sandals- you will wear them all the time-maybe even to wine country ;)!

  21. My dear Kim … I must confess … I am now a true Birks convert … and now know to never say never to anything! the white leather pair I have now integrated to my wardrobe basics are as welcome in the garden as they are to the beach and even make it for casual cocktails pares surfing! And now you have me placing a perfect gold Vans on my must have for a summer fun shoe!

    Thanks for the Inspire!

  22. Great post! Shoes always get my attention (handbags too!) Some of the flats this year do look clumsy but very comfy I'm sure. I have some Birkenstocks which are a kind of bronze but I'm still not sure they are totally me. Love your Steve Madden sandals - great colour. Skinnies and nude tops are a favourite of mine (and I love my Wayfarers!)

  23. I have to admit that I'm glad comfy shoes are in style. However, I love the ones you bought. Not wild about the overall look of birkenstocks, but I'm all about comfort.

  24. Hi, love your new sandals. And those sunglasses are classic. Don't listen to your kids, ever. For me, Birkenstocks are not attractive at all. Thanks for the great post.

  25. I just gave my sister pretty much the exact same Wayfarers and she is thrilled with them, she also wears aviators too. I love my sunnies and love to chop and change styles all the time.

I don't wear Birks but I do have those Adidas pool sandals which I wear at least twice a week for swimming....well not actually swimming but to go from changing to the pool oh you know what I mean;)

Cant wait to see you working those Maddens!
