The Victorian Blouse- What Your Wardrobe Needs for Fall

Fall my favorite season is finally here! One of the freshest fall looks that I'm keen on is the Victorian blouse. It popped up all over at the many fashion weeks and many retailers have some pretty versions in their fall lineups. There's something very sweet and even sexy about these tops, but to keep the look current you must pair them with something unexpected and less feminine like faded jeans or distressed khakis and the like. Add pencil skirts or dressy pants and you risking looking like someone's mother from the 80s.  Here's a few ideas of how to make these blouses look cool:

Gorgeous with a latter-day Gibson Girl hairdo and I think a dark jean is perfect. I'd add a brogue shoe with this.

Even cuter in a print! Love the addition of corduroy and the bob with bangs!

Mom jeans (yes they are a thing now) with mannish loafers, and a bun.

The bun seems to pair well with these blouses, just add in a rough element like destroyed jeans or tough boots, lest you go all Little House with these prairie versions.

Prints are romantic too.

Stilettos and leather looking jeans play nice with the frillier blouses.

The devil-may-care ponytail can work in a pinch as too and shows off the pretty details on this blouse.

Looking for myself, a few versions I am contemplating found on the interwebs:

This navy blue lace top is from Anthropologie. Comes in a khaki and black as well. Gorgeous.

This Anthro blouse is paired with a velvet blazer. Lovely. This top is also available in a berry color perfect for autumn.

A great fall color from Nordstrom.

This beautiful silk blouse is a splurge, but could be in the wardrobe for years.

This striped ruffled number from Ann Taylor also comes in a white, but I like this soft cameo color.

I also love the emerald color of this Zara beauty.

A silk version by Haute Hippie.

I like the simplicity of this cotton H&M offering.

Finally this beautiful top by Isabel Marant who makes perfect pieces to add to one's closet.

Think Deborah Harry meets Laura Ingalls Wilder and you'll put the right spin on this cute look!

Happy Fall!

  1. Such a pretty look, love all of your picks. I like this type of blouse with jeans, I think it's such an easy fall outfit. I bought one a few weeks ago that has a three quarter sleeve and a v-neckline with ruffles, and a camisole style too that has lace at the bottom, both in an ivory colour from an April Cornell shop, remember that brand? I wore her dresses in the mid-90's when I was a young mom still in my grunge boots paired with victorian type clothes. That style has kind of come back around again. :) Happy Autumn to you Kim XO

    1. Dani, Those sound so pretty. Maybe you'll have on your blog? I very much remember April Cornell and have some table linens still from there. So you still have the shop in Canada? I love the idea of you in those dresses with grunge boots! Happy Autumn ! xx

  2. LOVE THE JEANS in the 4th shot........any idea?
PS.ANTHROPOLOGIE OPENED a BIG BIG store in WALNUT CREEK you may have to skip over!

    1. Contessa, They could possibly be these by Mother
or maybe these? These are on sale now for $89, and most likely them, but only a few sizes left looks like:

I'm dying to get up to Anthro. I heard they have amazing furniture up there. Let's do it. xo

  3. Hi Kim, I've been wanting to relax and enjoy this post since it came through on my email. I love your pics and tips for making it not look all too precious. At 55 I lived through this era and was well versed in the whole look. Adding an edge to the look is the only way I could make it work this time around. Lovely styles - at all price points. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back around. Some BIG issues going on behind the scenes with my step-daughter :( which has been hard. I just launched my new curated travel agency so I AM excited about that. I have a fun giveaway going on to celebrate it so I hope you enter. Can't wait for cooler temps of fall around here. Would love to connect sometime when I'm down that way, girlfriend.

  4. PS-your header looks so fresh and pretty! x

  5. So glad you posted this Kim with great photos because I feel like this trend is so pretty and ladylike but I'm always timid to try it in case it looks too puffy. It looks so stylish with the skinny jeans and loafers so thank you for sharing! :)

PS - I agree with Heather, your header does look really fresh and pretty.
